WIRES Wildlife Pouches

WIRES Pouch Project

When young wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, bandicoots, gliders or possums come into care, they need to be kept warm, safe, and quiet — just like they would be in their mother’s pouch.
That’s where the incredible carers at WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service) step in.

These carers are always in need of suitable handmade pouches to comfort and nurture the animals while they recover.
Each pouch has a purpose — some cradle two or three tiny ringtails, others are perfect for growing brushtail joeys, and smaller ones gently hold very young bandicoots.
So, a variety of sizes are always welcome and put to good use.

Together, We Make a Difference

From sewing to knitting, from upcycling to nurturing — every small act adds up.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in supporting WIRES and our local wildlife through this meaningful project.

Who Helped The Beats.org

Boomerang Bags

A massive thank you to Boomerang Bags, who helped sew the outer pouches for this project!

Boomerang Bags is a community-driven initiative creating free, reusable shopping bags to share and borrow — helping people say goodbye to single-use plastic. By engaging local communities, upcycling fabrics, and sparking conversations around sustainability, they’re making a real difference.

Each bag is made from reclaimed materials, helping to reduce the 200,000 tonnes of textile waste that end up in Australian landfills every year.

The Kimbriki Boomerang Bags group, led by Tanya and Marina — two passionate Northern Beaches locals — combine their love of sewing and mending with their commitment to the environment.

While shopping bags are their main focus, they also make jewellery pouches for chemotherapy patients and project bags for local primary school crochet groups. Their kindness and creativity truly ripple through the community.

Knitting Nannas

And of course, a big shout-out to our very own Knitting Nannas — led by the wonderful Betty and her crew — who lovingly knitted the soft inner linings for the WIRES pouches.

These dedicated nannas pour hours of care into every stitch, ensuring each little joey or glider stays snug and warm. Their work is a beautiful reminder of how compassion and community can come together to make a difference for wildlife in need.
